For more than 50 years, Gunstock Ranch has been a family-owned landmark on Oʻahu’s North Shore, welcoming guests and kamaʻāina to experience authentic paniolo, Hawaiian culture, breathtaking landscapes, and meaningful connections to the ʻāina. Founded in 1973 by Max Smith—Hawaiʻi’s former state veterinarian and an inductee in the inaugural class of the Paniolo Hall of Fame—his family continues to honor his legacy through sharing and perpetuating paniolo traditions, sustainable cattle ranching, and teaching the legends and history of our ahupuaʻa. Visitors can explore the ranch through guided horseback rides, off-road adventures, intimate experiences, and opportunities to plant native and endemic trees in partnership with HLRI reforestation efforts.

Gunstock Ranch is committed to community connection, cultural support, and the responsible care of the land and its people. Safety and guest experience guide every tour, while sustainability remains central to our mission—from restoring native forests, to maintaining ethical herd management, to partnering with locally owned vendors and supporting Hawaiʻi-based artisans and businesses. We strive to create a welcoming, inclusive environment where guests of all backgrounds can feel the spirit of aloha and where respect and authenticity shape everything we do. At Gunstock Ranch, every visit is more than an activity—it’s a chance to learn, give back, and be part of a living legacy.
